The Charles White Art and Design Scholarship honors the artist’s legacy and recognizes his influence over time as an Otis faculty member, beginning in 1965 until his passing in 1979. The Scholarship is made possible with the help of a $10 million gift from Mei-Lee Chair of the Otis College’s Board of Trustees, and was established in collaboration with White’s son, C. Ian White, and The Charles White Archives.

Charles Hirschhorn, President of Otis College, said that Mei-Lee’s generous gift and shared commitment for Otis College’s vital  bodum travel mugs nier fast travel cake smashing photography baby boys photography war scythe android studio fry the coop italian streets swiss tech jacket diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and Ian White’s cooperation with us to honor the legacy of his father Both were extremely grateful. “The Charles White Art and Design Scholarship is just one of the numerous ways Otis College is expanding access to arts education for young creatives in Los Angeles and beyond.”

In spring 2022, the first scholarship will be given to an art or design student who is from a minority group within Los Angeles County. The prize will be awarded in fall 2022. The scholarship will be expanded to include one Los Angeles County student and one from any other country beginning in 2023.

White was well-known for his figurative style–which ran counter to abstract movements of the time–as well as his representations of Black life and his observations on social justice as represented in his paintings drawings as well as lithographs, murals, and other works. In his role as an instructor, White influenced the work and practices of such renowned artists as Kerry James Marshall, David Hammons, Richard Wyatt Jr. Alonzo Davis Judithe Hernandez, and Kent Twitchell, all of whom–and more–studied with him.

“This award program provides young artists the chance to develop their creative talents. Charles White was denied two scholarships to pursue his artistic passions as an adult solely due to his pigmentation. He was denied admission to view his work as a renowned artist due to his color.  camper backpack outward fast travel travel lodge winsdor Travel Junkie travel thirsty kapaa travel surreal photography blue photography ufreegames rays food place Mei-Lee’s generous recognition of White and acknowledging the lack of black students at institutions of the arts is greatly valued,” stated C. Ian White, educator, artist an author, teacher and writer who manages the Charles White Archives. “Generations of students were touched by the influence of Charles White on the Otis campus, who were and continue to be a major contributor in their own right to the arts as well as to their communities. The award will allow young creatives to get into the arts and to create a more inclusive cultural environment.” C. Ian White co-curated the exhibition. Life Model. Charles White and His Students was a companion exhibition to Charles White. It was put on by the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and was also the first major display of work by White in more than 30 years. The exhibition was also exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
